Investment considerations

Direct Equities: Concentrated low-cost exposure

Managed Funds: Professionally managed and diversified investments made on your behalf

International Assets & Exposure: Australia makes up only approximately 2% of the global economy. We live globally, so we should invest globally. There are many international opportunities available to us now that weren’t possible even 10 years ago.

LIC & ETF:  LICs are investment companies listed on the stock exchange; ETFs are public security that trade like a stock and serves a proxy for a group. They are liquid and diversified, accessing particular assets.

Bonds: Bonds are similar to a loan you give an investor at an agreed fixed rate for a set time. They are considered safer than stocks. In return, the borrower promises to pay you interest at regular intervals, then repay your loan at the end of the term.

Annuities: “An annuity pays you a guaranteed income for a set time. You can choose whether you want the payments to last a lifetime or a fixed number of years. Unlike other retirement phase income products, annuities give you certainty, you know how much you'll get and how long it will last.” – MoneySmart, ASIC

Warrants: “A financial product issued by banks and other financial institutions that lets investors buy shares (or other securities) over a period of time, making an initial payment and paying the balance later. A form of leverage as it involves borrowing to invest, and investors are charged interest and fees on the outstanding amount but get the benefits of owning the whole investment, such as receiving dividends. – MoneySmart, ASIC

Capital Protection: Protection mechanisms and capital guaranteed

“Capital guaranteed and capital protected structured products usually promise to at least repay your original investment at the end of a minimum period.” – MoneySmart, ASIC

Cash:  You can never have too much wealth. At Smart Capital, our focus to protect what you have, ensure you understand what is available for you to invest in, and then construct an investment portfolio and a strategy that has the best chance of meeting your desired outcome.

Investment and wealth management considerations

Bruce Broadbent was recommended when we still had a young family in 2006. I’ve typically been risk-averse, so I needed someone to show me how I could protect my family should something happen to me, and also what I needed to do to secure our future as we grew older. Bruce remained our financial advisor even when we spent six years working away from Australia. He has never been pushy, rather he has always provided me with sound advice and invited my feedback on all occasions.

As our lives transition towards retirement, I continue to rely on and trust Bruce to give me the best advice on how to achieve our financial goals. I am very happy I met him when I did.

How to choose an investment advisor.

It all boils down to communication…

When choosing an investment advisor, we recommend you find someone you can easily communicate with, someone you can trust and talk to easily. Likewise, you should feel that they listen to you and clearly communicate your options.

You achieve the best results when both sides, the client and the adviser, are confident in each other, the communication is concise and the goals are clear.

A good outcome is when you, the client, understand what you are doing and why. Your investment plan should be so clear to you that you could do what we call “the barbecue test”. Without much drama, you could easily explain to a friend at a barbecue what you’re doing with your finances and why.

You’ve chosen an investment advisor that respects the fact that it’s your money, so you should know exactly what you’re doing with it.
